Impending meeting renegotiating union contracts

In the article I was sent it said that MP has more staff and higher total wages than any other city of our size in the 9 Bay Area counties. Well, how did that happen. I would assume that that the officials who negotiated the contracts that resulted in this did not do a very good job. Are we willing to have an honest conversation or are we instead more concerned about being politically correct? I feel MP needs to offer a lower pay structure and a less attractive retirement program to NEW employees but keep the same structure for those that already work for the City. Through natural attrition time will resolve the financial problem, but in the meantime MP DOES need to tell the unions that they need to forgo the 2.5% pay increase AND to accept pay cuts. The pandemic affects ALL of us and the union should not be exempted from participating. I own rental investment property in MP and my tenants cannot pay their rent so I have accepted a pay decrease. My lending institutions have deferred my making mortgage payments so they have participated in my problem. Likewise, the union needs to participate in the problem. Everyone needs to participate in the problem. MP needs to think ahead much better than they have and not have such lofty wages and retirement benefits. If people don't like it, let them quit. The country already cannot create enough new employment to keep up with the number of people seeking employment. There will be plenty of people able to take these jobs and be happy that they have a job. I own a business in SF and sometimes an employee will value their worth to the company at an unreasonable level or at a level that the company cannot afford. When the don't get the raise they want - they quit. And guess what, a new person is ready and willing to accept that job and very happy to have it. I didn't negotiate away crazy wages and benefits just to keep someone happy. MP needs to be doing this. This is not to say that one shouldn't treat employees properly, etc. However, one needs to keep within a budget and not give away the store.
