Fwd: Alert: PCE and Nuclear Energy

Hi Diane, Please look over this message when you have a chance and let’s discuss. I’ll call you tomorrow about it. Michael Begin forwarded message: From: Al Weinrub Subject: Alert: PCE and Nuclear Energy Date: May 14, 2020 at 3:15:27 PM PDT To: Al Weinrub To: Sue Chow Michael Closson Janet Creech Gladwyn D'Souza Ted Howard Phillip Muller James Tuleya Folks, I'm writing to you as members of the California Alliance for Community Energy who are in Peninsula Clean Energy territory. If you have been following the Alliance's statewide conference calls, you are aware that PG&E has received permission from the CPUC to sell carbon-free energy (nuclear and large hydro) to Community Choice agencies. Discussion of the hydro and nuke purchase is on the Board agenda for the May 28th PCE Board meeting. The Board packet will be out next week which will include updated financial analysis and staff recommendations concerning the purchase of PCE's allocation of such energy. Because PG&E is selling the energy at a brown power price, Community Choice agencies can potentially save some money compared to procuring other carbon-free sources. What is driving this offer, however, is that PG&E has lost so many customers to Community Choice that it needs to dump its excess nuclear energy on Community Choice agencies. Otherwise the power content label of its bundled customers will show such a large portion of nuclear that PG&E risks being unable to meet the state's RPS. If PG&E sells its nuclear energy on the open market it risks the subsidies (the CPUC-guaranteed profits) on its seriously overpriced nuclear power. For the many reasons outlined in the attached fact sheet developed by the East Bay Clean Power Alliance, the East Bay Community Energy Board turned down PG&E's offer on April 22 and will not be adding nuclear to its energy mix. For similar reasons, MCE Clean Energy, Sonoma Clean Power, CleanPowerSF, and Valley Clean Energy will not be taking the nuclear energy offer. The Clean Power Alliance in Los Angeles has rejected a similar offer from Southern California Edison. I wanted to bring this issue to your attention with the hope that folks in PCE territory will agree that nuclear energy has no place in the energy mix of their Community Choice program. Thanks.
