Please help our kids get to school safely

Dear Council,

Please act now to help our kids get to school safely and help general safety overall for anyone using our roads. Everyday there are near misses with our kids trying to get to school. More frequently, there are actual accidents, some with serious injuries. Why wait for the absolute worst outcome to happen before taking any action at all? Today, my son was trying to cross Oak Ave at Ambar Way; one car stopped to let him cross; the cars behind just went around that car and passed on the right….didn’t even see that the first car had stopped to let someone cross the street. And, honestly, that’s just a a typical day. The city has a huge climate change agenda, but you are pushing more parents to drive and sit in long car lines because they don’t feel it is safe to have their kids walk or bike to school

You have filled our small residential streets with massive construction vehicles (It’s lovely to watch Gary Pollack’s excavation equipment and 10 ton dump trucks speed by within feet of elementary school kids walking/riding to school); you have filled our streets with speeding cut-through traffic; you have created some of the most unsafe intersections that I have ever seen and allowed simply too many vehicles for the space that we have. The least you could do is use available funds to help the youngest members of our community simply get to school safely.

Thank you.
