Council:
Two alternatives are still available for a balanced Parkline project.
1. an all residential with 1,896 dwelling units.
2. a balanced office and housing project with 1,769 dwelling units.
Neither were studied and both were rejected for flimsy reasons.
The City needs housing. The region needs housing. The State of California is requiring that we approve housing projects. Since SRI filed its application to redevelop its 62 acre site the office market has lost its appeal to commercial investors. Also Sacramento has come down hard on California cities that have continued to resist higher density housing developments. There is a 32% office vacancy in Menlo Park. Long standing commercial developers (i.e. David Bohannon) are proposing residential rather than office. Obviously the path ahead is clear. SRI parcel is an opportunity that cannot slip away..
Menlo Park will make a grave mistake in approving 1M sq ft of office in the heart of the city.
