Requesting your Participation in Wear Orange Day

Dear Menlo Park Mayor and Councilmembers, First, I want to thank you for voting to adopt the Safe Storage Ordinance earlier this year! I am writing on behalf of the California Chapter of Moms Demand Action group to invite you to participate in our annual Wear Orange https://wearorange.org/ > event, which we’re taking virtual on June 6 this year! We wear orange to fight for a future free from gun violence. We honor the 100 lives cut short and the hundreds more wounded by gun violence every single day. We honor our survivors. We elevate the voices of our partners, who do life-saving work within our communities, helping us realize a future free from gun violence. We wear orange to be seen and demand to be heard. I realize this is an incredibly challenging time for our district and the state, and that the COVID-19 pandemic presents a new set of challenges for all of us. We hope that this virtual event provides the flexibility for our gun sense champions like you to participate. While some types of crime are down during this time, sadly gun violence is not. In fact, it has risen in some cities. And, as you likely know there has been a spike in gun sales. This spike in gun sales is deeply concerning, particularly for the millions of children unexpectedly at home with unsecured guns, women sheltering in place with abusers, and anyone struggling economically and psychologically. (Link: CNN - Corona Virus Gun Sales Spike https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/02/us/fbi-gun-sale-background-checks-coronavirus/index.html >.) And because of this, we deepen our resolve to raise awareness through Wear Orange, which occurs during the National Gun Violence Prevention weekend. June 6th is California's Virtual Wear Orange Day. We will be hosting various virtual opportunities. We would appreciate it if you can participate with us and have listed a few ways to do this: ? Turn your website or elements on it orange. ? Put the link www.wearorange.org http://www.wearorange.org/ > on your website or social media platforms leading up to the June 5-7 weekend with information on the importance of safe gun storage, particularly during this time. ? Change your social media frames (we will have these available mid-May). ? Wear orange and post about why you're participating with the hashtag #wearorange. The more creative the better! ? If you are interested in participating in some way on our CA virtual day Saturday 6/6 please let me know. (we’ll be asking for photos and videos to share) We are so grateful to you for making gun safety a priority in California and appreciate your participation in any form!
