Dear City Council members, Last night I participated for my 2nd time in the Zoom version of the book cub led by Todd Pierce. It was a fabulous and vigorous discussion of the chosen book. It's delightful to see people of different ages and backgrounds coming together this way! It keeps our brain neurons working. And, I, only 65 years of age, but having a mother who had Alzheimers, I appreciate greatly the stimulus to read and discuss challenging books. I so appreciate the library making available to us books at a time when we can't just go inside a library to borrow them. Book clubs abound but few read and discuss the literary merits of literary books (as opposed to commercial or genre fiction. Philip Roth (an influence on the author of the book we read) said a half dozen years ago that the novel would die out in 20 or less because of distraction of screens. Instead we are using the power of the screen to bring people together around a novel, and a difficult one at that! As a writer of fiction myself, I deeply value this opportunity. Todd brings so much knowledge and insight to the discussion and so does Brett Melanson. Without their remarks I'd often be left wondering if I understood the work rightly.
