I am listening to the council meeting but see no way to “raise my hand” to speak I have 2 suggestions: 1. When you.pair 2 officers, as much as possible pair a majority officer with a minority officer (black, Latino, Pacific Islander….). I suspect there are not nearly enough minority officers to pair up, so please cycle through. If an officer does not want this, (s)he should be considered for removal. In at the meantime, the department should actively recruit from our minority citizens. 2. Recognize that we are all racist, ALL. I suggest all officers (from chief on down) participate in annual racial sensitivity programs. One of which I am aware is Undoing Racism. A resident has been very active in this project for several years. You can contact me for her contact info. Just FYI, when I have visitors from Kenya, I feel concern they might be stopped. I always give them a card with a note saying that person is my guest and giving my contact information. I’m embarrassed that I must do this, but regardless of denials, we all know that persons of color, especially but not exclusively male, are often stopped for “walking while black”.
