Dear City Council, Staff and the General Public, I hope that you can join us tomorrow for the inspiring presentation from Scott James, author of Prepared Neighborhoods. Mayor Taylor, and Council Members Carlton and Mueller -- thank you again for being Block Coordinators with MPC Ready. The speaker and I just went over his presentation and I was very impressed with how he customized it to help the MPC Ready organization with its goals for broad disaster preparation across Menlo Park & adjacent County. The speaker's emphasis on disaster preparation through the lens of "love and community building," in contrast with fear-based approaches, was well received by FEMA when James spoke at their national training symposium. FEMA asked James to present due to the author's focus on helping neighborhoods, which brought FEMA's broader goals (typically aimed at entire cities) into manageable smaller groups within a larger entity. James's presentation will include why organized neighborhoods are important, innovative ways to recruit volunteers, gain sponsorships, get people to take disaster preparation training and then act on the ideas! A Q&A with the speaker will follow his presentation. Disaster preparation is a timely topic and a most important one. I hope you can join us.
