Hi City Council,
Im writing to support the approval of Consent Calendar Item #I-4:
investing in sustaining and restoring hours at both Belle Haven and Burgess
pools, in partnership with the current pool operator, Menlo Swim and Sport
(MSS).
I believe MSS has consistently adhered to city recommendations and provided
necessary financial and usage data. More importantly, MSS has done a
fantastic job cultivating a vibrant environment and program, making
swimming a significant and integral part of life for residents of all ages.
My name is Joyce, and Im a lap swimmer who has been swimming at Burgess
Pool nearly every day, mornings and afternoons, for the past 5 years. I
want to share my personal experience of what a hidden gem this facility
truly is.
For years, I struggled to maintain workout routines at other local gyms,
even those with beautiful amenities. But everything changed at Burgess. I
was amazed by the genuine connection among swimmers. We greet lifeguards,
front desk staff, and each other by first name. I’ve made real friends
here. This is a true community where people support and care for one
another.
In the mornings, I swim alongside a group of seniors who have their daily
water fitness class. Many of them have gone through illness, losses, or
other setbacks in life, and its truly touching to see how they all help
lift each other up. They keep coming back because this is where they find
vital support.
In the afternoon, I swim alongside my 11-year-old daughter’s swim team. The
lanes are filled with children aged 4 to 18. Despite their full schedules,
the team camaraderie is what brings these children back daily. My daughter,
often grumpy after school, becomes cheerful the moment she hits the water.
That is the magic of this pool.
Thank you for your work to keep this pool open. We urge you not to
jeopardize this community. The friendships and relationships here took
years to build. Burgess Pool is where people of all ages thrive. It is our
happy place—a place where we find connection, support, and a moment of
bliss. Please ensure it continues.
