Mayor and Councilmembers,
Two of my kiddos bike on Coleman to and from the Laurel Upper Campus each
day. I still bike with my younger son and his friends, but we are getting
close to the point where they will be biking themselves. Which makes cars
parked in the bike lane on Coleman especially problematic as it forces the
kids to use a lot of brain power to do a shoulder check, exit the bike
lane and merge with car traffic, go around the parked car, and then head
back into the bike lane.
Yesterday there were two cars parked in the bike lane (see attached) which
seems to demonstrate that folks are not fully understanding how much the
children need the safety of that space.
I recognize that the Coleman changes are currently in the pilot phase, so
Im hoping this email will be something to remember when discussing a
potential physical barrier between cyclists and cars at the end of the
pilot.
