Dear Mayor Nash and City Council members,
At the special Council meeting on December 2nd last year regarding Save Downtown Menlo’s initiative, some of you, particularly Council members Nash and Schmidt, trumpeted support for democracy, declaring how committed you are to discover the will of the voters and that you therefore rejoiced at the prospect of placing the initiative on the ballot in November.
So how do you explain the fact that your staff is recommending that you now select a developer and prepare to designate the downtown parking lots as Exempt Surplus Land even though the whole issue of whether you have authority to make these decisions rests upon the result of the election in November when the citizens’ initiative will be voted on?
And how do you explain the fact that last December, the city told a prospective business owner the downtown parking lot housing was a done deal and building would commence in 2027?
Sincerely,
Cherie Zaslawsky
