Dear Menlo Park City Council members;
My name is Barrie Hathaway, and I am the CEO of JobTrain. As I am unable to attend tonight's council meeting, I wanted to provide a brief response to the study session report on the Climate Action Plan and BlocPower. My comments are specifically relating to the workforce development component of the study session. I am encouraged by your emphasis on building pathways for local residents to secure employment in many of the jobs that this engagement would bring to Menlo Park. I have not been in conversations with BlocPower, so I do not have insights into the types of jobs they would need to fill, and therefore I cannot say with confidence that JobTrain can play a meaningful role as a workforce partner. That said, JobTrain would be excited to engage in planning conversations to explore ways we can help. As a Menlo Park site for Cañada College, JobTrain has a close relationship with them, and I think we are well positioned as partners to help build a strong, skilled workforce for this program.
I also believe, based on our understanding of funding streams, that there are real options to secure workforce development funds for climate-related green jobs. Given sufficient lead-time, based on what I know, I believe we can work together to fund a strong program if we come to the conclusion that our approach to workforce development is aligned with BlocPower's needs.
I applaud your hard work on this program and want to you to know that we will gladly be part of the ongoing conversation and will do our utmost to help community members secure good jobs with BlocPower.
