To the City Council
A local newspaper printed an article about the Council considering charging a fee to all local papers for each of their distribution boxes in Menlo Park. I receive the agenda and did not see this specific item for your meeting on the 28th; however, I must comment. It is disgraceful for the Council to consider burdening our local news agencies when they are already struggling. Imposing such a charge to them would leave them with options such as printing/distributing on few days, shutting down or going to subscription only. So much for our free press! It is hard to believe that the council could be so clueless. PLEASE DO NOT ADD TO THE BURDEN OF OUR ALREADY STRUGGLING NEWS AGENCIES. AND DO NOT INCREASE THEIR RENEWAL FEES. If the council wants to raise revenue, then PLEASE consider a vacancy tax on the many empty spaces downtown - some of them empty for many years.
Respectfully,
