Driveway parking

Hello:

My name is Jon Hagstrum and I have lived at 430 O’Connor Street since I bought the house in 1985.

Yesterday a MP police officer came to my door to inform me that a neighbor had complained about our 1999 Toyota pickup truck we keep parked in our driveway. Attached is a picture of the truck in our driveway after we had re-parked it as close to our garage door as possible. This is a bit misleading because my wife usually parks the truck much farther from the door (1-1.5’) to avoid hitting it, which causes the trucks rear to protrude father out over the sidewalk. This, I think, was when the complaint was made, even though we have parked the truck in our driveway for the last 25 years without a problem. Even in the photographed position, the officer said we are out of compliance because the rear bumper still extends beyond the end of our driveway. It looks like a larger portion of the truck is over the sidewalk in the photo, but this is because I was standing at the center of the truck when taking the picture.

What are we to do? I wish the driveway was longer, but it is not. We could park the truck in the garage, but the garage is not much bigger than the driveway and it would be more difficult to access our storage cabinets in the garage. Also, we’d prefer to keep the older truck outside in the weather rather than one of our newer, more expensive sedans (both 2016). We thought of gluing tire stops to the driveway to make it easier to park the truck deeper in the driveway, but if the neighbor still complains the officer has to come back and next time he might award us with a ticket.

Is there some kind of waiver we can get for our truck’s bumper or do we have to park one of our newer-model cars in the driveway? Please advise.

Thanks very much,

Jon Hagstrum and Kate Paddock
