* Topics By the Numbers: Cannabis, Alcohol, RFPs, Housing, Solar, Short-Term Rentals
* Local governments are rushing to spend remaining ARPA funds ahead of the deadline requiring unspent monies to be returned to the Federal Government.
* Short-Term Rentals are replacing Cannabis as primary new revenue source for local governments.
* Development extensions are being granted as projects are delayed including utility scale solar developments in Arizona, Virginia and New York.
What topics do you want to know more about?
Local Control:
Local government control has increased overnight with several monumental Supreme Court decisions. We believe that state regulators and local governments will need to assess regulatory gaps caused by the overturning of the Chevron Doctrine.
* City of Gran Pass wins! City of Grant Pass v. Johnson (23-175): The Supreme Court upheld Grant Pass anti- camping ordinance allowing the city to fine unhoused persons sleeping in public parks. This decision bolsters the ability of local governments to regulate issues related to public health and safety. (Link to Decision)
* Todays Supreme Court decisions that overturned the Chevron Doctrine could be significant for state and city governance as the decision has significantly limited federal administrative power.
* The Selective Service sent Stanislaus County, CA a letter advising the county to educate its residents of the draft registration requirement for 18-year-old men as the compliance rate for Stanislaus County is less than 50%. The letter outlined the consequences to these individuals for failing to register ahead of the late registration age of 26.
Infrastructure Development Forecaster:
Construction, solar companies, and consultants will be busy this year as local governments are replacing federal grant money with bond measures. Contact us if you would like to understand the categories of projects and amounts allocated by year.
* California School Boards approved resolutions for more than $6 billion in bond measures with more to come ahead of the November 5, 2024 ballot measure deadline. The majority of the funds raised will be used to modernize classrooms, improve safety, and create energy efficient facilities.
* Charlotte, North Carolina is seeking $178M in funding for capital improvements including construction, road repair, and stormwater drainage.
* Jersey City, NJ is seeking $57M in funding for capital acquisitions and improvements.
