Willow Oaks park baseball field safety concerns

Hello all,

I would like to inform you that all the fencing on the Willow Oaks Park school field has been cut down. I saw the man that was doing this, this morning. He flipped my daughter and me off. My daughter is 4 years old and was very scared of him and his aggression and his dog. Maybe a more permanent solution is needed? Can you please help us keep our kids safe.

Best,
Jessica

Hello and good morning,

I wanted to report that every morning at 7:30 AM when I am walking my daughter to school the same man is out with his off leash dog. I don't confront him since he is the man many parents have had issues with. I have called the menlo park police and reported this. I will call every day if that is what it takes to keep my daughter safe on school property. The man takes his dog off leash on the Silicon Valley International School parking lot then allows his dog to run inside the gated area of the baseball field and then throws a ball for him there and in the other areas that are not within the dog park area. Can you tell me what you can do to keep my daughter and myself safe on your school property. This I believe is a huge liability to the school district and the city of Menlo Park.

Best,
Jessica

Dear Ms. Huckabay,
Thank you for your message sharing your concerns about off-leash dogs on the school field next to Willow Oaks Park. Your attention to this issue is appreciated.

Off-leash dogs are only allowed inside the enclosed dog park area at Willow Oaks Park. Dogs are not allowed on the adjacent school field. It is unfortunate and disappointing that some dog owners choose to disregard the posted rules and leash requirements. This unauthorized behavior deprives other visitors from feeling safe and welcome, and is unacceptable.

Off-leash dogs observed on the school field or park pathways can be reported to Menlo Park Police dispatch at 650-330-6300.

To report an emergency, call 9-1-1.

The school field is owned by Ravenswood City School District and is maintained under a joint-use agreement between the school district and the City of Menlo Park. The City of Menlo Park owns and operates Willow Oaks Park adjacent to the school field.

The City of Menlo Park, in partnership with Ravenswood City School District, is taking steps to discourage unauthorized off-leash dog activity in Willow Oaks Park and the adjacent school field:

· A City-funded park ranger on January 3 began patrolling the park in the early mornings and late afternoons

· City crews in the coming days will be installing temporary fencing at the perimeter of the school field with new signs clearly indicating that the field is for school and league use only, and no dogs allowed

· The enclosed dog park at Willow Oaks Park is scheduled for renovation later this year. The dog park improvements will include new ground cover that is intended to be more appealing to dogs and dog owners

· The Park and Recreation Commission is tentatively scheduled to view a presentation of the Willow Oaks Park renovation plans at its regular meeting on Wednesday, February 23.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have questions or would like more information. And thank you again for bringing this issue to attention.

Best regards,
Sean

Hello all,

I haven't heard back from anyone regarding this issue and the plan moving forward.

Can you please give us an update.

Do you think it is best to have our parent group come to the city council meetings, parks and recreation meetings and school board public meetings?

Certified letter sent to school superintendent of Ravenswood School District and mayor of Menlo Park.

Best,
Jessica Huckabay and parents of Willow Oaks neighborhood and schools

To whom it may concern,
I am a concerned Menlo Park community member who utilizes the field at Willow Oaks park to allow my 3 year old to run and play. I want to bring it to your attention that there has been conflict between off leash dog owners and parents on a number of occasions and I have had to call the police over 30 times, due to this concern. A German Sheppard dog ran down my daughter while she was running through the baseball field near Silicon Valley International School. The next day the dog owner was out with the dog off leash again. When asked to leash the dog they refused and started verbally attacking me when I was with my 3 year old. This has happened daily between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM and then from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. In the evening hours there are around 15 off leash dogs. In the morning it is 5-10 dogs off leash. I bring this up because it is a safety issue and it is occurring on Ravenswood School District Property. I have brought the issue to Mayor Combs, Parks and Recreation Commission, City Council and the Chief of Police. They state it is Ravenwood School District property and that it why I am writing to your organization. I implore you to please keep our small children safe on school property. We just want to be able to walk to school without fear of being attacked by dogs or their owners.

A concerned parent of the community in which you serve.
