Dear Mayor, Vice Mayor, and City Council Members,
I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you for your support of indoor recreation programs and for recognizing the importance of preserving these valuable community offerings.
After watching the recent City Council meeting, I felt compelled to share what these programs mean to my family and to so many others in our community. Recreation programs are much more than classes on a schedule. They are places where friendships are formed, confidence is built, skills are developed, and people of all ages find a sense of belonging. They create communities within communities.
I was honestly surprised to learn that cutting these programs was even being considered. As someone who participated in recreation classes as a child in the 1980s and has continued to enjoy various programs as an adult, I know firsthand the value they bring. These offerings have been a meaningful part of our community for generations.
Most importantly, I have seen the impact through my own children. My daughter has benefited tremendously from participating in dance classes through the recreation program. These classes have become her happy place—an outlet where she can express herself, build confidence, develop friendships, and be part of something bigger than herself.
The instructors who lead these programs are among the most dedicated, passionate, and community-minded individuals we have the privilege of learning from. They do far more than teach a skill. They inspire, encourage, mentor, and create welcoming spaces where children and families can thrive. The sense of community they foster is truly special and cannot easily be replaced.
One of the things I appreciate most is that these programs provide a pathway for children to grow year after year. My daughter can continue participating as she gets older, deepening her skills, building lasting friendships, and remaining connected to a community that supports her growth. That continuity is invaluable.
Thank you for recognizing the importance of these programs and for supporting opportunities that enrich the lives of so many residents. Our family is deeply grateful, and we look forward to participating in these wonderful community offerings for many years to come.
With appreciation,
M. Dolan
