Dear Friends on Menlo Park City Council,
I write to express my strong support for Item #J1, the Resolution on BlocPower LLC to provide electrification services to property owners that want to switch from natural gas to electric. A partnership with BlocPower to electrify our great city of Menlo Park is a rare opportunity, one where we can leverage both the finance and expertise BlocPower to accelerate the city’s transition to electrification. It is a possibility that we should seize.
To decarbonize our building stock, we need to unlock financing to speed electrification which then makes it accessible to everyone as the pricing becomes more affordable. Gas used in homes and buildings contributes over 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in Menlo Park; the implementation of a BlocPower pilot program would be foundational in moving toward the city’s ultimate climate goal of transitioning 95% of users to electric by 2030.
The opportunity for a public-private partnership in which there are multiple benefits that supports all income levels and increases workforce knowledge bases, where we can leverage both financing and expertise to meet the challenges we all face, do not come around often. It is one that we should seize whole heartedly. I enthusiastically support the proposed resolution in support of BlocPower providing building electrification services to Menlo Park residents. I am confident that residents will benefit greatly from this important effort.
Please consider a vote yes on a fantastic program that would encourage others to follow while concurrently helping California and the country accomplish our climate goals and establish a clean energy future.
