Upholding Liberty and Justice for All
“Liberty and justice for all” is one of our country’s most familiar ideals.
But its true value is not measured by how often we repeat it. It is
measured by whether that promise holds when our communities need its
protection most.
As we mark CAIR-SFBAs 32nd anniversary, this year’s gala theme reflects
the responsibility we share: Upholding Liberty & Justice for All.
Upholding that promise requires more than words. It requires speaking up
when rights are treated as optional, challenging institutions when they
fall short, and refusing to accept that some people are less entitled to
safety, dignity, or equal treatment than others.
It also means recognizing that progress is built through the persistence of
those who seek justice, the courage of those who tell their stories, and
the collective action of a community willing to show up for one another.
For more than three decades, CAIR-SFBA has worked alongside community
members who insist that these ideals must apply in practice, not only in
principle.
On October 17, we will gather to make that promise real: to guard our
liberties and demand justice, together.

Tell Governor Newsom: Protect Our Community Priorities
Last week, we shared several important wins
in California’s 2026–2027 budget, including increased funding for
immigration legal services, permanent support for nonprofit security
grants, and continued investment in community-based programs.
Now, we need to make sure that progress is protected.
Send a message to Governor Newsom today to thank him for supporting these
community priorities—and urge him to take action on two issues that remain
unresolved.
The Two Unresolved Issues
First, urge the Governor to reject the punitive $50 monthly healthcare
premium for many immigrant adults and withhold authorization for it next
year.
Second, ask his administration to ensure that the state’s $10 million
Holocaust and Genocide Education Grant Program supports honest education
about all genocides—including the ongoing genocide in Gaza—and protects
diverse student viewpoints and free speech in California classrooms.

Eight Bay Area Representatives Vote to Cut Military Funding to Israel
Eight Bay Area members of Congress voted to cut $3.3 billion in U.S.
military funding to Israel, joining a record number of lawmakers who
supported Rep. Thomas Massies amendment
.
Although it did not pass, the vote marked the first time a majority of
House Democrats supported ending this funding.
CAIR-SFBA commends Reps. Mark DeSaulnier, John Garamendi, Josh Harder, Ro
Khanna, Zoe Lofgren, Kevin Mullin, Nancy Pelosi, and Lateefah Simon for
supporting the amendment.
We also condemn Reps. Sam Liccardo and Jimmy Panetta for voting to continue
the funding and are disappointed that Reps. Jared Huffman and Mike Thompson
voted "present."
The outcome reflects a growing shift in Congress and sustained advocacy
from communities across the country demanding a foreign policy rooted in
human rights and respect for international law. While more work remains,
this vote demonstrates that public pressure is changing the conversation in
Washington.

Thank You, Rep. Khanna, for Speaking Out
CAIR-SFBA thanks Rep. Ro Khanna for speaking candidly about his recent
detention in the occupied West Bank and for continuing to tell the truth
after Israeli officials denied and misrepresented what happened.
His outspokenness matters. What happened to a sitting member of Congress
reflects the violence and intimidation Palestinians face every day, as well
as the Israeli impunity that shields those responsible.
CAIR called on Congress
to condemn the detention and demand accountability from the settlers and
Israeli forces involved. Congress must also confront the broader system
that allows violence and intimidation in the occupied West Bank to continue
unchecked.
Rep. Khanna used his voice and platform to say what his colleagues in
Congress need to hear. They should follow his lead.

When an Agent Knocks:
A CLE Webinar for Attorneys
Federal investigations targeting protest movements and political dissent
are increasing. Attorneys may be called on to advise clients when FBI
agents arrive to question them or when they receive grand jury subpoenas
connected to movement activity.
This two-hour continuing legal education (CLE) webinar will help California
attorneys—and attorneys in states with reciprocity—understand how to
respond in these situations and provide informed support to activists,
organizers, and others facing federal scrutiny.
The panel will feature attorneys Zahra Billoo (CAIR-SFBA Executive
Director), Moira Meltzer-Cohen, Mark Vermeulen, and Kate Hallinan, along
with organizer and former grand jury resister Katie Yow.
The webinar is cosponsored by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund,
CAIR-SFBA, and the National Lawyers Guild–SF Bay Area.
