Dear Mayor Nash, Menlo Park Councilmembers and City Staff,
I support the recommendation of City Staff (Staff Report #26-151-CC) to
Council to adopt a resolution that makes the Coleman Avenue Pilot project
permanent.
Making the project permanent sends an important signal that Menlo Park is
committed to its stated priorities around eliminating traffic deaths and
injuries, creating a network of Safe Routes, and reducing our climate
impact. I only wish we had a commitment from the County to extend and
connect this important safety infrastructure!
I am a Menlo Park resident, a senior, and I get around by driving, walking,
and biking. For myself--and for everyone who moves about in our city--I
want safer, more efficient, and more user-friendly ways to get around. To
that end, I would love to see protected bike lanes, traffic calming, and
safer intersections throughout the city.
If were going to meet our climate goals, we need less solo driving, which
means creating and supporting attractive alternatives. If were going to
meet our Vision Zero goals, we need to support better visibility for all
users, which means making tradeoffs for safety over convenience. No one
should have to risk being killed or injured because they cant see around a
parked vehicle.
I applaud the Citys thoughtful engagement with the community and its
data-driven approach on the Coleman Avenue pilot project. I urge you to
continue this approach and to prioritize the planning and building of
a *connected
network of safe routes*.
Thank you for the work you do to improve the safety and quality of life for
those who live, work, or go to school in Menlo Park.
