I encourage the landscape architectural firm choosing the plants for the freeway interchange to use Douglas fir trees. The tree is native to Northern California, uses little to no water, will grow in all soils, and is resistant to oak root fungus. If also choosing native oak trees the the trees can be purchased as, natural, branching all along the trunk as opposed to a standard tree that is has a bare trunk and a canopy. The natural tree will mimic a redwood better than lollipop pruned tree.
