What Do You Do With 450,000 Pieces of History?
You certainly can’t put them all on display.
The San Mateo County Historical Association cares for a collection of more than 450,000 artifacts, objects, photographs, documents, newspapers, and pieces of everyday life that together tell the extraordinary story of the San Mateo County.
And here’s the part most people never see:
Only a fraction of them can be displayed at any one time.
Behind the exhibits you know are thousands upon thousands of pieces of history, each with a story waiting to be discovered.
Some are significant because they document major moments in our county’s history.
Others might look surprisingly ordinary, until you learn the story behind them.
This is one of those stories.
