In 50 years in the practice of law with my 3 brothers and 3 nieces, we have counseled clients on personal and business matters.
Examples:
Advising a client who had no experience working in a restaurant, on his decision to buy a restaurant.
Advising the daughter of a client on her decision to marry a man with a criminal history.
Both clients ignored my warnings.
Restaurant: went bankrupt.
Marriage: ended in divorce.
I see this happening to the city council of Menlo Park.
The council members want to have apartments on the parking lots in downtown Menlo Park so badly, that:
1) They Refuse to acknowledge that they do NOT have the real estate experience and skills to recognize the massive flaws in the developers proposals.
2) They Ignore the written demands of 135+ of the business owners; AND their rights, asserted in a pending lawsuit.
Unfortunately:
Unlike my clients, the council members will NOT pay for the damages caused by their bad decisions.
They will be gone, back to their private lives, and the businesses and the tax payers will be left to deal with their mess ( their LEGACY ).
Council members, YOU ARE WRONG. But: There is still time to STOP, and save Downtown Menlo Park.
