Public Comments for City Council - 10/18/2022 & 10/20/2022

These were my prepared remarks for this week, however in light of the cancellation, Ill submit here and comment next week.

Good evening Mayor Nash, Vice Mayor Wolosin, councilmembers, neighbors, and members of the public,

My name is Jenny Michel from the Coleman Place Neighborhood block, your local resident recovering homeless gal and by profession, a commercial property manager.

Have you ever had a wound so deep that you knew even time could not heal it? I have.

Last week on Oct 11th, Jesus Conteras Benitez tied on the job while trimming trees on Peggy Lane. This incident has stopped many of us in the field in our tracks. Many of us work several jobs. The idea of losing your life for just one of these jobs is sobering.

PLEASE donate to Jesus Contreras Benitez - the go fund me donation page.

This evening my comments are how this relates to Measure V.

Because in our general plan, it is required to lay out like a road map how we plan on tackling the various needs of our residents and how to address some larger obligations we have as a municipality, we lay our cards on the table. We are showing how we are to address the future that is now.

In my profession, I am paid to provide my forecasting skills to owners, investors, and asset managers. The forecast I see is bleek, based on the current trajectory of our increasingly unstable planet, our unstable workforce, and our unstable health conditions.

We must do all that we can to safeguard all our workforce, including our day porters and nightly security workers, away from fire prone regions, like the sierra nevadas. That is where my workforce is coming from. Do you know where yours is coming from?

I plead with you as neighbors and fellow champions for robust cities, to please vote no on measure v.

The State of California has demonstrated a commitment to us, the greater good and general public, to combat these unimaginable challenges and catalysts we are facing and will face in our lifetimes. There is a treasure trove of resources available to us who exhibit a demonstrated commitment to exceeding our housing needs. Mrs. Chessari would do well to familiarize herself with the HCD.

But we seemed determined to keep the residential character of our zoned low and ultra low density neighborhoods, aka SFR character. What exactly is that character?

Is it being tethered to a single use vehicle and propping up the oil and auto industry who have not demonstrated a commitment to the greater good? Is it excluding our working class neighbors?

Have you worked several jobs for several years? The wear it takes on a person cannot be measured by our current for municipalities like ours. You become susceptible to corruption. You become willing to be leveraged. You no longer have dignity nor can you compute the idea of a social fabric. Are these dots connecting? Question Mark?

If Measure V passes, I dont worry, because the State is here to have our backs. What I worry about is the blatant narcissism that we are defining as our residential character we are trying to protect. Its kinda gross. Ew. And Its really outdated, and also dangerous.

What happened to starter homes? Lets normalize neighbors, normalize density in mild-climate job rich areas (OURS), and starter homes for all of us, not just the current homeowners in our city? Right? Am I wrong here?

Post Script: Narcissism traits to be weary of include:

1. Superiority and Entitlement:

Usually terms are reduced or distilled into terms of right/wrong, good/bad, ultimately regarding staying at the top of the hierarchy, where one can feel safe, I imagine.

Although they know best, the idea is they are not wrong. If there is fault to be rendered, it is not their burden to carry.

2. Need for attention - our society now attempts to foster this characteristic. Be wary of those of us who require love and attention that is never enough. The core issue being insecure and fearful of not measuring up. No matter how much is given, it is never enough.

3. Lack of responsibility, blaming and deflecting - Although the need for control is there, again it is based in insecurity and when the results are not as intended, blame is rendered to another party.

4. Lack of boundaries - seeing clearly where one begins, ends, where one responsibilities are and are not, is a challenge. The assumption is that we all feel as you do, if you are not feeling it or obliging, then you are subjected to what I would equate to as a temper tantrum.

5. Lack of Empathy - relatability suffers when you cannot empathize. Selfishness runs amuke. Perceived threats, anger, and rejection appear real. Reality is therefore distorted and ones ability to self-regulate is compromised.

6. Emotional Reasoning - logic, although is used prolifically, is not able to be understood accurately. Logic and reason do not render themselves useful. If you dont go along with their solution, you can be met with resentment.

7. Fear - is usually the primary motivator. The fear of being found out for the fraud they are is consuming. If you are concerned you may be in a relationship with a narcissist, please call NARA. As a municipality, we are encouraged to develop balanced humans and address any narcissistic tendencies immediately.

Thank you for your ongoing service to our city and region. Our family thanks you.
