Bike lanes on Middle Ave

Dear City Council,

Thank you for your service, and support for our community. I am writing as the Principal of Oak Knoll Elementary School, where some of the bike riders on Middle attend school. We serve approximately 560 students in grades K through 5th grade, and also have an Early Learning Center on our campus. We strongly encourage biking or walking to school if possible, as we have found it to be healthier for our students and better for our environment. Student safety is always a priority as a principal and I support all efforts to increase bike safety and ensure that students are safe in our community while biking. Students who can bike themselves have increased agency and responsibility, and are often more resilient as they develop the skills to problem-solve on their own. I understand the delicate balance with Middle Avenue specifically and would advocate for the bike lines and no parking to be a policy only during school commute hours to protect our most vulnerable community members and reduce the impact on businesses or churches on Middle.

Thank you for your consideration,

Alicia Payton-Miyazaki
