Please Move Ahead Swiftly with Safe Bike Lanes on Middle Ave (Option 1) While Continuing to Explore Solutions for Apartments & Special Circumstances (but not delay long-needed protections)

Dear Mayor Wolosin, City Council Members, and Staff,
I’m writing in support of continuous, safe, full-time bike lanes on Middle Ave, that ensure students and others can ride safely at any time of the day (Option 1). Many commentors have suggested alternatives and steps that could help address the concerns from renters and others that have surfaced during the extensive public process, and I hope these can be explored in a timely way. However, given the many residents who frequently bike on Middle Ave, I hope you will move forward right away with continuous bike lanes, unimpeded by parking – these are much needed protections.

As a climate advocate, my colleagues and I support safe bike routes to encourage more people to replace local car trips with biking. This is not only an important way to reduce pollution from car traffic in a warming world where we’re already feeling the impacts of climate change, it’s also a healthy and low-cost way to get around, empowering kids and those who cannot drive with mobility options. And for those who prefer driving, safe bike lanes reduce traffic, by allowing more people to opt for biking over driving.

As the parent of a teenager who has been struck by a car on his bike (he’s ok!), and knowing these types of accidents are too frequent, I think safety should come first. Thank you for the many years of work and thoughtful discussion on this item.
Kind regards,
Diane Bailey
