Re: Agenda item I1 - Middle Ave Bike Lanes
Hello Menlo Park City Council,
I am writing in support of installing bike lanes on Middle Ave to enhance safety and rideability in the city.
I am a resident and live on Palm Ct off of Stanford Ave, near Middle Ave. I frequent the parks, church, Safeway, and visit friends who live on the streets off Middle Ave. As much as I would like to bike with my family for many of these trips, its simply too unsafe given the speed of cars and proximity of cars to bikes. I was once riding with my son and his friend on Cotton Ave/Middle Ave, and the friend was almost hit by a car that passed too close.
I understand that there is strong opposition by various constituents for dedicated bike lanes, and I sympathize with the inconvenience of fewer parking spots and longer walks. Having lived in Colorado and also having spent time in bike friendly cities like Amsterdam, I can say that the trade offs are worth it. If the weather was adverse for part of year like in Colorado, Id understand the issue with asking people to walk just a little bit further. But one thing we can see only if we choose to install bike lanes is the vibrancy and activity that would come with a more bike friendly street. It will get people out, encourage more community, and enhance everyones quality of life. Thank you for supporting this initiative.
Best,
Will
