Dear Council Members,
My husband and I joined Menlo Masters in 2001, shortly after our son was born. My husband was already a competent swimmer, but at 38, I was a rookie, gasping for breath. I received a warm welcome from my lane mates and Coach Sheeper from day one. They encouraged me and gave me tips on how to improve my stroke--lessons that serve me to this day. Within weeks I was keeping up with my teammates and I was hooked, not just to swimming, but to the experience of being part of a generous community. While my fellow swimmers came from all walks of life, in the water, with Tims dynamic, thoughtful coaching, we were equal, united, striving to be our best selves. The make-up of the team is vastly diverse. All types of athletes and non-athletes are always warmly received.
My husband and I swim 4-5 mornings a week. Our son learned to swim from the wonderful instructors at Menlo Swim. It is a facility that is well run, the staff is kind and professional, greeting us all at 5:45 AM by name and with a smile. It is where we go not just to stay physically fit but to meditate and have a healthy outlook on our lives. It is our second home.
I hope that as you reach your decision, you consider the enormous contributions that Menlo Swim has made to our community. We hope this irreplaceable resource will continue to be available.
Best regards,
Mitchell Johnson and Donia Bijan
