Here are images of how other cities have accommodated the conflicts between motor vehicles and trains. Safety and traffic flow are the major issues addressed by an elevated Caltrain Aesthetics and noise are also considerations important to neighbors of Caltrain. Elevating the tracks also simplifies and improves the design for the Stanford bike/ped undercrossing.
Take a little field trip to San Carlos and Belmont. Take note of the bike/ped u/c at Arroyo in San Carlos.
