To Mayor Wolosin and esteemed City Council Members,
I am reaching out to seek your guidance concerning the potential falling hazards posed by a number of large eucalyptus trees situated in our schools front parking lot. Our concern is heightened due to the persistent severe weather conditions, which have already resulted in two trees falling in recent years. In the event of a sizable earthquake, we are even more concerned about the potential for harm.
On October 23, 2021, one of the larger eucalyptus trees fell over during a Saturday, luckily without causing any injury or loss of life. However, should this occur during school hours, the outcome could be catastrophic and lead to significant property damage and casualties. On March 21, 2023, another species of tree located at the back of our campus uprooted and fell onto one of our school buildings, but thankfully, no one was harmed.
We have already exhausted all preventative measures, including several passes of canopy trimming by a professional tree service company, which has reduced the top weight of the trees. We also had them perform root fertilizer treatment and confirm the healthy condition of the root balls. Despite our efforts, we still require further guidance from the city to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
