Menlo Park through Generations - Clockworks

To All Concerned:

My grandfather journeyed from Greece, making a home in West Menlo. While he was still with us, my father transformed the familys West Menlo farm into what we now recognize as Vasilakos Manor, an enclave nestled off Camino Los Cerros. Our lineage has deep roots here, dwelling through generations in the heart of Downtown. Over the decades, I have borne witness to the towns evolution, its position between Palo Alto and Redwood City intriguing yet peculiar, given its seeming reluctance to match their vibrancy.

The nickname Deadwood City once echoed around Redwood City, a moniker derived from its failure to attract business and people. The town was, simply put, a bore. But Menlo Park, with its unchanging, sleepy charm, continues to outdo it in this respect. As newcomers flock to Menlo, they wield an inexplicable power, dictating the norms of our town.

Yet, change is creeping in, and I couldnt be happier. Our Theater, mirroring The Little Fox of Redwood City, has become a hub for renowned musicians and entertainment. Traditionally, Id have taken my custom to Redwood City, but now I eagerly anticipate shows closer to home.

Menlo Park, for the most part, remains frozen in time. We saw the re-emergence of the hardware store, a small victory against the wave of closures that claimed old favorites like the Village Stationery store. Thankfully, Clockworks endured, avoiding the fate that befell its neighbors.

Now, as Clockworks seeks to contribute to Menlo Parks vibrancy, a handful of detractors are aiming to thwart their plans. Why not open yet another rug store, or perhaps a nail salon to placate the newer inhabitants? Or how about another thrift store?

The languid pace of the town tires me, and I harbor hope that the Planning Commission has the wisdom to devise strategies to make Menlo Park more appealing. The influx of people would bring life to our restaurants and, ultimately, increase city revenue.

Its puzzling to me why the fate of Clockworks is even a topic of debate. This business has been a staple in our community for decades, receiving steadfast support from longstanding residents like my family and friends. We are enthusiastic about seeing them flourish. I eagerly anticipate savoring a martini at the Clockworks bar, not because the town needs another bar, but to champion our shared heritage.
