Mayor Wolosin and City Council,
I would like to take this opportunity to request the one lane, one direction street closure of the 600 block of Santa Cruz Avenue be reopened.
The streetaries, when designed well and maintained, add a nice flavor to the city. But the one block, one direction street closure is an oddity. It confuses all parties - pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles. Near misses are constant.
Santa Cruz Avenue is the commercial artery and subsequent tax revenue base for the city. It should be a fully accessible throughway for all types of traffic.
I understand the long held vision of building a public space. But this is a remnant of a quick reaction to a once in a lifetime (we hope) pandemic event. I cant imagine that if the council set out to "build" the best public space, that the prime solution would be to close one direction of traffic for one block.
Please reopen Santa Cruz Avenue, both directions, from El Camino down to University Drive.
