Hi Menlo City Council,
As a resident of the Bellehave neighborhood, I strongly support the proposal to fully staff the new facility, the MPCC (Menlo Park Community Center), for several reasons.
1. **Community Programs:** The MPCC construction led to the suspension or reduction of community programs in our underserved neighborhood, including the gymnasium, fitness center, recreation services, and aquatics center. Fully staffing the facility will allow us to restore and expand these much-needed programs, providing our residents with opportunities for physical fitness, recreation, and a sense of community.
2. **Library Space:** The prospect of having an expanded public library space that spans two floors is exciting. Our current one-floor library space is limited, and a two-floor library would provide more resources, study areas, and opportunities for learning. This is especially crucial for our children and students who need a quiet and supportive environment to excel in their studies.
3. **New Services:** The addition of services like makerspaces and a teen zone will be invaluable for our community. These services promote creativity, innovation, and skill development among both our young and adult residents, enhancing their educational and personal growth opportunities.
4. **Nutrition Services:** The proposed creation of a new job classification to support enhanced nutrition services is a vital addition. This will ensure that our senior center and youth center participants receive nutritious meals and health/wellness education. Many residents in our neighborhood may face challenges accessing healthy meals, and this service will address that need.
5. **Overhead and Operating Costs:** The 37,000 square foot facility will require ongoing overhead and operating costs, including utilities, supplies, and services. Fully staffing the facility is essential to ensure its efficient operation and the maintenance of a welcoming and safe environment for all users.
In conclusion, supporting Scenario 1, which recommends funding for the full staffing of the MPCC, is essential for our underserved community. This investment will not only help us recover the services that were temporarily disrupted but also introduce new opportunities for growth and development. It will create a vibrant community hub that fosters learning, health, and social connections, making our neighborhood a better place to live for all residents. I urge the City Council to prioritize this funding to serve the needs of our community effectively.
Sincerely,
-Eddie
