News from MPC Ready

.

Dear Safety Advocates, Officials and Supporters,

Our apologies in the delay in sending our September newsletter and invitation to the Sat, Sep 26 Community Meeting. We are thrilled that Menlo Park Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman will be our speaker at this meeting. Please join us and feel free to invite others!

September is Preparedness Month

Our experiences with the pandemic and now wildfires reminds us all of the importance of disaster preparedness! Nationally, September is officially recognized as Preparedness Month and Mayor Taylor and Council have recognized September as Menlo Park's Preparedness Month as well. We want to help more residents to be prepared, which starts with knowing our neighbors! Block Coordinators help the neighbors to meet!

* FLU SHOT. Please also get your flu shot early! Many symptoms of the flu are almost indistinguishable from coronavirus symptoms, and a flu case spike will greatly complicate the pandemic response. So please take a moment to get your flu shot and the CDC especially wants us to do this early in the flu season, or by the end of October. Learn more at the CDC flu site.

* DOOR HANGERS. We are planning a focused distribution of door hangers, with information on MPC Ready and what's needed in an emergency kit, starting with Belle Haven Areas 29 and 24. If you would like to help, please meet me, Mayor Cecilia Taylor and the Area 29 and 24 Block Coordinators on Sat, Sep 19 at 9 a.m. in Hamilton Park (777 Hamilton Avenue) in Menlo Park. We will have cold water and pre-packaged snacks! Please wear masks! After introductions and dividing up the streets, we will work in pairs to cover both sides towards our goal of reaching all 1,400 houses & apartment buildings in about 60 minutes, or whatever the volunteers have time for. We also plan door hanger distributions in other MPC Ready areas. Please reach out if you can help with this "one-off" project. I will attach the copy so you can see what the door hangers will say. We are having a version printed in Spanish too. They will be printed on both sides of standard door hanger paper.

* GET READY TRAINING -- The next one is tomorrow and it's not too late to sign up! Get Ready training: Households (Thu, Sep 17 @ 7 p.m.) Let me know if you have any problems signing up. After tomorrow, the next one will be Thu, Oct 8 @ 7 p.m.

* SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER -- welcomes new block coordinators, gives emergency evacuation tips, spotlights Suburban Park Neighborhood and more! Service projects are a great way to unite a community, as we see from Suburban Park! If you have an idea for the newsletter, please let me know. I am also seeking guest contributors to write articles, such as one on portable generators to give us all guidance as to the options and pros and cons of each!

BLOCK COORDINATORS ARE STILL NEEDED. If you are thinking about doing this, please let me know! Emergency preparedness efforts are also a catalyst for building more tightly-knit neighborhoods!

If you would like to unsubscribe from this distribution list, please let me know.

Warmly,

Lynne Bramlett, Co-Chair, MPC Ready
