Dear City Council Members,
The staff has recommended that the speed limit be reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph on a portion of Middle Avenue, but not between Olive Street and University Avenue. I am writing to urge the council to reduce the speed limit to 25 mph along this section of Middle Avenue. This section of Middle Avenue is part of the official bike route to several schools, and is heavily used by students, pedestrians, bicyclists, and people parking for church and a preschool in the neighborhood.
A group of Middle Ave neighbors met with then-mayor Ray Mueller in the late spring of 2019 to discuss the future management of Middle Avenue. The meeting included a discussion regarding excessive speed and suggested several speed calming measures. At that time an additional stop sign was proposed for the long stretch of Middle Avenue between University Avenue and Olive Street, possibly at the intersection of Middle Avenue and San Mateo Avenue as many walkers and bikers cross at this point to access the bike bridge. Please reduce the speed limit along this stretch on Middle Avenue to 25 mph and consider additional speed calming measures including an additional stop sign.
