Dear City Council,
I would like to propose to rename Fremont Park.
My understanding is that Fremont Park was named after Fremont Camp, a military installation likely named after John C. Fremont, who served as the first US Senator from California.
John C. Fremont lead multiple genocidal campaigns against California natives, including the Sacramento River massacre, the Klamath Lake massacre and the Sutter Buttes massacre.
As such, Fremont Park is likely named after a mass murderer.
Would we name our parks after Hitler, Stalin, Ted Bundy or Jack the Ripper? Of course not! - So, it’s high time to change the name of Fremont Park.
Sincerely yours,
Jan Weber
