Dear City Council-
Please, please do not make Coleman Avenue a one way street, and please do not restrict the already limited street parking that we have.
Please consider the tenants living on Coleman Avenue.
While I understand that the street is challenging for the school bikers and walkers, closing the street will not change that. It will simply cause a brief bottleneck area for these bikes and walkers with the proposed area of closure, and they will still be amongst the traffic on each side of this.
Coleman Avenue is a residential street. Residents and emergency vehicles need to have access to our homes. My building also has NO guest parking. When there was work being done on my buildings property, I was also without parking on the property. I relied on the street parking, which is not even free at night, to be able to park and walk to my back building. Imagine not being able to park within several blocks of your home and having to carry groceries or laundry that far.
I also live on the side of Coleman that would only have the already impacted Willow road as my main access road, if Coleman were to be closed to cars in the middle. An emergency vehicle can barely get through Willow Avenue now with all of the traffic. I feel that closing Coleman Avenue puts the tenants at greater risk of not having emergency vehicle access routes.
The problem with Coleman Avenue is that it is narrow, on top of having two tree roundabouts in the middle of it. It was not designed for bike lanes sadly and much of the bikes and walkers are cutting through on Coleman from Willow. I see this every morning. This foot traffic will not stop with the road closure, nor will the residents, emergency vehicles, tree and power line workers, mail delivery workers and all other people that need to maintain access to our homes. Closing Coleman off will simply create delays in access for all of these vehicles. Unless the road can be widened, the problem with foot and bike traffic will remain. Please don’t cause harm to we tenants 24/7 over through traffic and school traffic that lasts a few hours daily. Vote No to making Coleman Avenue one way and taking away street parking. We need to live here safely too.
Thank you,
Amy Harner, Coleman Avenue long term tenant
