Dear Mayor Ohtaki and Councilmembers,
Thank you so much for your work to create the pilot “Oak Grove” bike route going east-west through town and creating a safe route
for many schools. I concur with many of the Complete Streets Commissioners who have noted that the professionally collected data,
pre- and post-pilot, shows that the Oak Grove Bike Route has benefitted the community in many ways, encouraging more bicycling
while reducing collisions.
I hope you will make this route permanent, and also consider making safety upgrades to continually improve it. Many students use
this route to reach Hillview Middle School, but the route unfortunately does not currently connect Oak Grove with the bicycle
lanes on Santa Cruz Ave. The data shows that bicyclists are not using Crane to get to Santa Cruz. Instead, they are continuing on
Oak Grove past the designated bike route to the T-stop with University and continuing on University. That is the most
straightforward route, but is less safe. Please consider adding a safe connection from Oak Grove to Santa Cruz in the future.
Other Complete Streets Commissioners have expressed additional ideas for safety improvements. I hope those can be considered as
well, again, to continually improve the route.
Overall, this pilot has a been a big success. Staff have done an excellent job creating the pilot route and having it monitored.
Thanks again for helping students and all residents get around town safely!
Sincerely,
Diane Bailey
