Dear City Council Members,
I am writing to express my strong support for the proposed affordable housing development on city-owned parking lots in downtown Menlo Park. Through the Housing Element process two years ago, I became aware that these downtown lots could potentially serve as valuable sites for affordable housing, and I am encouraged to see this possibility moving forward.
Building affordable housing in this central, walkable location near transit is a forward-thinking approach that will make it easier for residents to access transportation, employment, and essential services, all while reducing our community’s reliance on cars. This aligns with Menlo Park’s sustainability and livability goals and will create a more inclusive environment for individuals and families from diverse economic backgrounds.
Developing housing on these city owned parking lots also allows Menlo Park to maximize space efficiently and responsibly. As our city continues to grow, prioritizing affordable housing in downtown will help address the significant shortage, offering workers, seniors, and families and young adults a place to live near their jobs and community resources.
Incidentally our family has never had an issue finding parking downtown and we have lived here for over 20 years. We look forward to a vibrant downtown with people walking, shopping and living near Santa Cruz Avenue.
I urge the council to fully support this initiative and bring it to fruition. Thank you for your dedication to fostering a more vibrant and accessible Menlo Park.
