Dear City Council Members,
Changing an election method is a big deal and should be done with great care. Regardless of the level of trust in our elected
officials, there is an inherent conflict if they are tasked with making an ultimate decision regarding election methods. It is for
this reason that I would urge you to include in any charter that any change in election method go to a vote of the people. The
other option for maintaining oversight (without needing a petition of 10 or 15% of registered voters) would be to have an elected,
independent, Charter Commission, as stated in the Staff Report. However, I agree with the drawbacks listed in the report. A
preferable action would be to have an Advisory Charter Commission and then to have it go to the people.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,Jen
