Dear Members of the Menlo Park City Council,
I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed housing development in downtown Menlo Park. While I recognize the need for housing solutions, I believe this project raises significant concerns that should be carefully considered before moving forward.
Key issues include:
1. Strain on Infrastructure: Downtown Menlo Park already faces challenges related to traffic congestion, parking shortages, and aging infrastructure. Adding a significant number of residential units would exacerbate these issues, negatively impacting the quality of life for current residents and visitors.
2. Impact on Downtown Character: The proposed development risks altering the unique charm and small-town atmosphere of downtown Menlo Park. Overdevelopment could overshadow local businesses, limit public spaces, and diminish the appeal of the area as a community gathering place.
3. Inadequate Planning for Services: Increased population density would place additional demands on schools, public safety services, and utilities. Without a clear and detailed plan for accommodating these needs, the development risks overwhelming existing resources.
4. Traffic and Parking Concerns: Downtown Menlo Park already experiences high traffic volumes and limited parking availability. A new housing development would likely exacerbate these challenges, creating frustration for residents, business owners, and visitors alike.
I urge the City Council to carefully consider these concerns and seek alternative locations or solutions that balance the need for housing with the preservation of Menlo Park’s downtown character. Potential alternatives might include focusing on mixed-use developments in less congested areas, prioritizing affordable housing near transit hubs, or exploring opportunities for adaptive reuse of existing structures.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I trust the Council will make a thoughtful decision that reflects the best interests of the Menlo Park community.
Sincerely,
Henry N. Kuechler IV
