Honorable Menlo Park City Council,
I support building new affordable homes downtown and I urge you to do the same on January 14th.
I built my home in Seminary Oaks in 2019, and for a year, my homeless brother lived in the back yard in my ADU. At the same time, a family of three was living in their car and frequently parked over night in front of my house. I am literally a Yes-in-My-Backyard
advocate on the CA housing issue. But more to the point about downtown, I live walking distance to downtown PA and downtown MP, and both are plagued by lots of vacant storefronts and WAY too many carpet stores. I know some people fancy Santa Cruz avenue as
a Design District, akin to Sacramento St. in SF, but let me say clearly that as a resident this is NOT WHAT I WANT. I want a downtown with life. Parents pushing strollers, kids whining for ice cream, pedestrians all over, balloons, music, the smells of food
and the sounds of joy. I want what Mountain View, San Carlos, and San Mateo have. Me, my family, my kids are the future of Menlo Park, and it is not Flegelmans furniture and oriental rugs.
Big changes are hard, and all residents will not agree on this, but the TIME IS NOW FOR BIG CHANGE. Lets get more folks of mixed income living and working downtown, the shoppers AND the workers.
Please vote "yes" to new affordable homes downtown on January 14th.
Sincerely,
Nick Merz
