Honorable Menlo Park City Council,
I support building new affordable homes downtown and I urge you to do the same on January 14th.
I live nearby and currently walk to the local stores, cafes, and restaurants, and I would like more people to be able to do the same. Living close to great cafes and restaurants, or near to grocery stores, or home goods stores and more, really helps to revitalize
the downtown area, and support our collective climate goals. More people = more business for the local stores. Its been so nice to walk down and grab coffee and sit on the chairs outside, in the winter sun. I would want more people to have the opportunity
to be able to live in a walkable neighborhood, without having to be employed in the tech industry.
Open parking lots are such a waste of valuable space. Do you want to make space for people? Or just make space for more vehicles? I think we should make space for people. Teachers, retail staff, other school district staff, and other local employees would
benefit from this "affordable" housing. Otherwise these employees will have to commute longer distances, and there is an increase in staff turnover when those same employees could work in the same area they live in. This could help to retain excellent employees.
The suggested plans intend to replace the number of parking spaces anyway, so its not like this is a trade of parking for housing. Its literally just ADDING housing, and benefiting the community. Everyone deserves access to live in safe, affordable homes, and
the parking lots represent a unique opportunity to meet community needs.
Please vote "yes" to new affordable homes downtown on January 14th.
Sincerely,
Alison
