Support Affordable Housing Downtown

Dear Menlo Park City Council Members,

I strongly support the proposed development of affordable housing on city-owned parking lots downtown. This project is a vital step toward addressing our housing crisis and providing homes for local workers, teachers, seniors, and families who make our city vibrant.

The downtown location is ideal – close to jobs, transit, and services – and repurposing city-owned land is an effective way to deliver much-needed affordable housing. Parking concerns are being thoughtfully addressed through careful planning to ensure accessibility and balance.

NIMBY opponents have reverted to their familiar refrain: claiming to support housing but “not this type” and “not in this location.” In the midst of housing and climate crises, such arguments are not only outdated but detrimental. It’s time to reject fearmongering and think boldly about Menlo Park’s future – one of inclusivity and abundance.

My wife and I have lived in Downtown Menlo Park for over three years. For the past two years, we’ve organized a block party on our street for National Night Out. It’s been a joy to see more than 120 people come together for conversation, food, and community building—and to witness that sense of community deepen throughout the year. This demonstrates the power of coming together. I urge the City Council to support the downtown affordable housing project, and I look forward to welcoming new neighbors to our block party in the future.

Sincerely,

Jason Ally
