I think declaring downtown Menlo Park parking plazas as surplus land is a fabulous idea. Our world is in crisis. We need bold ideas and bold moves on the part of our local governments.
I want Palo Alto to do the same. I am hoping Menlo Park gets there first and makes them look bad.
About losing parking: As anyone who has ridden in a Waymo Taxi knows, self driving cars are around the corner. Lidar assisted computer driven cars are so far superior to human controled cars, fifty years from now people will look back and wonder how a creature as erractic and unpredictable as a human was ever allowed to in control of several tons of hurtling metal. You might as well build housing on parking lots sooner rather than later. Lord knows we need the housing and the lots will be obsolete in a relatively short time.
