Dear Mayor Combs and Council members,
Some of you expressed fear over being potentially hit with another “Builder’s Remedy” if you don’t hurry up with affordable housing projects such as the one proposed in the downtown parking lots that the community of residents and our Mom & Pop businesses soundly rejected during Tuesday’s 6-hour meeting.
Many of us noticed that no relevant studies whatsoever have been conducted on issues such as: traffic, parking, schools, construction site issues, water, sewage, and greatly increased electricity demands on our fragile grid.
I suspect some of this ill-advised rush may be due to your fear over another Sunset-type assault using Builder’s Remedy.
So you need to know that Sacramento has put that tiger into a cage.
No need to run scared as it seems you’ve been doing.
Here’s a quote from law office Holland & Knight on the changes that occurred this month due to the passage of AB 1893.
The law replaces the "free-for-all" approach to Builders Remedy. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, new Builders Remedy projects must comply with site restrictions, density limits, certain objective local standards and other mandated requirements
So you can take a deep breath, slow down, and listen to the sound advice from our community who shared so many vital facts with you on Tuesday night, as well as making many good suggestions for alternative sites.
Finding sites that won’t harm our small businesses, and therefore our community, is key.
A good analogy would be the beginning of the Hippocratic Oath: First, do no harm.
Sincerely,
Cherie Zaslawsky
