Kirsten,
Jim Lewis suggested I contact you about the forthcoming discussion of re-formulating an art commission for the City Of Menlo Park.
I encourage you to pursue your ambition to revive the commission.
I suggest that the goals and structure of it be shaped by the largest benefit it can provide to the greatest number of residents.
What I mean is that the funds a percentage for the arts generates be applied to art work that will benefit the whole community,
rather then being spent on work confined to a private building. If you were to establish a public arcade or an area where each
sculpture or art work that was purchased or commissioned could be viewed in a continuous display, that would be quite powerful and
perhaps quite novel. I think the community would benefit from such an approach.
Perhaps starting with a compilation and review of existing art commission policies would provide some structure for revival of the
Menlo Park commission.
I encourage you to think as creatively as possible about its structure, as, if you do, that originality will attract the broadest
range of artistic talent that is available for the creation of public art.
I apologize for not being able to attend your Monday meeting; I recently broke my ankle so am rather immobile.
Please let me know if you wish to discuss this further.I may be available to participate in or prepare guidelines for the
commission.
Best,
Susan Dunlap
