Dear Council Members,
I believe that this rush to decide whether we should build a new library(ies) is misguided. The offer made by Arrillaga is
tempting of course but in the long run may prove to be expensive. The current main library is still within it a15-20 year life
span.
The studies to analyze the usage patterns of both our libraries and prospects for future use have not been brought forward to
support the construction of a new library at this time. The role of technology and how it will affect future library patterns of
visitation is unclear.
Does Menlo Park have any studies demonstrating a need for a new main library building? Is it reasonable for a City of our modest
size to support two libraries?
To suggest that the voters and taxpayers of Menlo Park should jump to issue bonds to pay for not one, but two new libraries is a
symptom of reactive rather than proactive governing.
Also, no mention has been made of what provision there would be in future budgets to support the additional operating costs of
these expanded facilities.
I respectfully suggest that the Council decline Mr. Arrillaga's offer to build any new library. Refurbish the present main library
if you wish. Get a bookmobile to supplement Belle Haven- or institute a system of shuttles from Belle Haven to the Main library to
transport library patrons. The distances are not more than a few miles at most.
Focus on the major projects you were working on before this offer was announced.
Sincerely,
Paula Maurano
