Soccer fields and community amenities in the Parkline development project

Send to: city.council@menlopark.gov

Dear Menlo Park City Council,

I’m writing to strongly advocate for a full-size playing field and additional dedicated community amenities to be included in the Parkline (SRI) development project.

As a parent and resident, I see firsthand how limited our field access is in Menlo Park. During the soccer season, we have to shuttle our kids to JLS in Palo Alto multiple times a week, which takes 30-40 minutes each way in rush hour traffic just to get to practice. Sometimes I ask him if they played any scrimmages and they say no because they had to share the field with several other teams. With the increased density of the SRI project, the need for local, accessible recreation spaces will only grow.

I urge the City Council to require a full-size 11v11 soccer field with turf for year-round use and lights for safe evening play. This is one of the few parcels for development in Menlo Park that is not surrounded by housing. It could support a field with lights with minimal impact on neighbors and would benefit sports players and other community activities.

This investment in our youth is vital. Studies show that lack of access to sports facilities significantly decreases youth participation by age 13. Expanding field space supports our kids physical and mental health and encourages them to stay active and engaged.

Furthermore, Menlo Park deserves a better deal. Other major developments have included $100M+ in community benefits. We should not settle for less. The SRI project should provide meaningful amenities that enhance the quality of life for all residents, such as bike paths, recreational spaces, and gathering areas.

I appreciate your consideration and prioritization of the well-being of Menlo Park’s families and children.

Sincerely,

Joyce Tung
