I have some questions about the recent hires [https://www.menlopark.org/civicalerts.aspx?AID=426]by the city for the Deputy City
Manager, Library Services Director, and HR Manager.
The lack of transparency in hiring practices has been raised previously by residents. As a concerned resident of Menlo Park, I
look forward to information that highlights some visibility and transparency: 1. Where were these positions advertised? Online job
boards tailored to civic/ govt. positions, city website, Indeed, LinkedIn, CalOpps, other?
2. What was the hiring process? I couldn't find this
info anywhere on the website
3. Was the hiring decision made by a committee or a
single individual?
4. When did hiring "interim" individuals become a
standard operating procedure for our city? City Manager, Library Director are just a couple of examples recently. Is "interim"
a way to get around ethical hiring?
5. What efforts were made to ensure diversity in the
hiring process? Please refer to the law [https://www.eeoc.gov/facts/qanda.html].
Here are three key points I'd also like to make: * We look bad as a city. Is this how we want to serve the citizens of Menlo Park?
How did we preserve the best interests of the residents of the city?
* Nepotism is not illegal but is that how we want to do business as a city?
* The county of San Mateo states this [https://hr.smcgov.org/recruitment-selection]on their website: "Recruitment and Selection
provides innovative, responsive, fair and consistent recruitment, and selection services to County departments, employees and
job applicants to ensure the County employs a qualified and diverse workforce that delivers essential services to the public."
Why doesn't Menlo Park follow these county guidelines?
As a concerned Menlo Park citizen, I want to ensure that the city has an innovative, responsive, fair and consistent approach to
hiring. Recently, it has shown quite the opposite.
